http://karateclassesonline.com Tekki Shodan, literally meaning "Iron Horse Riding, First Level", is the first of a series of three kata practiced in many styles of karate. The other two kata in the series are Tekki Nidan and Tekki Sandan.

The Tekki series of kata were changed and renamed by Gichin Funakoshi from Naihanchi to Tekki.

Naihanchi was derived from an older, original kata, Nifanchin. Nifanchin was brought to Okinawa via Fuzhou, China, at some point in the long history of trade between the two kingdoms. It was broken into three distinct segments, possibly by master Anko Itosu, Tokumine Pechin, or Motobu Choki.

The kata are performed entirely in Kiba dachi ("Horse riding stance"). The name Tekki itself (and Nifanchin) translates to "Iron Horse."

The Tekki series of kata are great conditioning for the legs and with practice, develop explosive power in the legs.

In the earlier days of karate training, it was common practice for a student to spend 2-3 years doing nothing but Naihanchi, under the strict observation of their teacher. Motobu Choki, famous for his youthful brawling at tsuji (red-light district), credited the kata with containing all that one needs to know to become a proficient fighter.

  • Motobu NEVER practised Tekki- he studied the Naihanchi kata. The movements of the Shotokan version are quite different from the Okinawan kata which Motobu practised. As Funakoshi was not a fan of Motobu Sensei, I would imagine that both would spin in their graves were they to know that you have likened their systems.

I would ask that you review the history of Motobu Choki as he was not the "thug" that many have made him out to be.

  • Yasaguri, thanks for the comment, I never said Motobu practiced Tekki. I haven't likened their systems intentionally, isn't it a fact that tekki came from naihanchi?

I will do as you say and review the history of Motobu Choki.

  • Nice

  • @WestBfella Care to give me an example? How can you say he has good knowledge of the kata, what is the basis of your remark? Can you name one JKA life member? Seeing as how that only takes place in Japan and that it is a private matter, how do you know? Do they have a tatoo? What is good about his stances, an example? Do strong techniques indicate knowledge? Is it possible that you really do not understand original karate, the JKA certainly doesn't?

  • muy bueno

  • nice performances on the tekki shodan kata

  • @IEKUKATAKA Geez, know-it-all.

  • @IEKUKATAKA I disagree - I think this kata shows many instances of bunkai. His attacks are consise and he has a god knowledge of this kata. His stance is good and his attacks are strong. His head moves with a sense of purpose - I have seen many a poor kata come from a JKA life member. This kata in my humble opinion is very good

  • Looks nice.

That's my absolute favourite Kata, I love to compare the way everyone does this Kata. It really is one of those things that shows how a person is. One of my friend does this Kata very nice, gotta love it.

  • Good kime for what? Speed for what? Control of what? I see no bunkai at all in this kata. Kata represent yakusoku kumite or some persons vision of what is happening. It is supposed to look like a fight. That being the case, what is this guy doing? The JKA made a big mistake when they changed established kata and assigned no rational bunkai. How they grade kata is nonsense. Before you go into lunar orbit, I am a JKA life member trained in Japan. I should know.

  • If you learned it today it's gonna take you a few years to do it almost as good as this guy does. This is a very good execution of Tekki Shodan.

  • very nice, good kime, good speed, good control!
