Taste Centers

The taste centers are in the cortex and in the thalamus of the brain. The organ of taste is the tongue. The surface of the tongue is covered with thousands of tiny fronds or papillae, which give it a velvety sheen. The taste buds, the primary organs of taste, are found within these papillae. There are four type of papillae-filiform, fungiform, foliate and vallate. Filiform and fungiform papillae are found on the front half of the tongue, and foliate papillae at the back. Filiform are threadlike in shape and more numerous than the mushroom-shaped fungiform type. Vallate papillae form a V across the back of the tongue. The base of the tongue is devoid of papillae, but is covered with nodules of lymphoid tissue, which make up the lingual tonsil. A taste bud consists of taste cells, with hairs that project into the moats surrounding the papillae, supporting cells and nerves. The salivary glands are connected by nerves to the taste buds. Stimulation of the taste buds stimulates the salivary glands to produce saliva.

  • Well see i had this tongue cleaner and i guess i scrapped to hard so the stuff that you u see on your tongue when u open your mouth not the buds but just the tongue like its scrapped off some of that in the back and how long will this take to recover because its hetig annoying

  • @mr808steelers Yes you can but people usually lose taste buds by burning them (such as drinking hot coffee). Taste buds have gustatory cells and they are among the most dynamic cells in the body. They are replaced every 7-10 days. So yes, your taste buds will grow back ☺

  • Question: Can you lose your taste buds by brushing your tongue vigorously? And if so, will your taste buds come back?

  • @Dzubur1

You may ask your dentist to inject an anesthetic in the wrong spot (palate nerve), killing the nerve...

Some dentists actually manage to do that WITHOUT the patient having asked for it!

Or, you could try to get a chronic sinusitis. This pretty much numbs your taste too.

  • @RespectMyHate jesus wants you to drown in a bath tub full of bullets

  • plz, im super sensitive to taste. If anyone knows a way for me to either numb my sense of taste or kill it completely, plz let me kno. And yes, I AM COMPLETELY SURE I WOULD BE HAPPIER IF I COULD NOT TASTE ANYTHING

  • @denergod Wow. That sounds really strange. Do those things even grow back? Not like I'm going to do that anyway since my tongue is fine, but my curiosity awakened. O_o

  • This system did not evolve. It was created by God.

  • @denergod

this is definitely serious and something "crazy" people do worldwide with no risk at all. But it is a secret to most people and not something you do unless you have a problem with your papillaes. It doesn't hurt at all.

  • are you serious???
