@rwp140 yeah you're right I think it was Takara and Toei Doga.

@nobodysperfect06 The cartoon was totally American besides some of the in-between animation work, which is often outsourced to Korea or Japan, but yeah- the toys that the characters were developed from came out of three other lines.
Japan did however pick up the series after the three American episodes that introduced the Headmasters.

Also I believe Transformers initially originated in Japan, I know the story is American, but most of the charaters, like Optimus Prime and Megatron were from Diaclone and Microman.
