A short time-lapse video from a star party held May 7, 2011 for a group from the Fleet Science Center in San Diego. More information on these events is at http://rhfleet.org/site/astronomy/palomar.html
@punishalltrolls I think you're misunderstanding both of my comments. I repeat "That's where technological progress comes into play, which we are not pursuing rigorously enough". Just for clarity, with not one word was I suggesting to throw away human lives or to carelessly send humans into space. Though I was stating my opinion that advancement of knowledge and understanding are worth -living- for, with no competition in sight from my perspective.
@punishalltrolls That's where technological progress comes into play, which we are not pursuing rigorously enough, which is part of what I wanted to say. I think that knowledge is among the very few things that are "worth it".
The universe, in all its splendour! But we are not exploring it… because dogmatic belief is more important to people than the advancement of knowledge and understanding.
I wish we would do more to go to and find out about all these places.

@playgrrrr worth dying for? low pressure, radiation, etc. in space can kill you. such accidents won't look pretty.
space travel takes too long. unless the exploration is that beneficial to life on earth...

@playgrrrr too scary and risky to travel far from home. anything could go wrong. mars, for instance. is it worth it?
