Environmental racism meets MTV. Or at least when they used to play music videos.

IT could happen to you.

This video is a class project for clinical community psychology Psy.D. students at the University of La Verne, CA. Our assignment was to create an advocacy video that would promote social justice. The cause we chose was environmental racism. Our intent was to create a humorous video that would gain viewers but not undermine the seriousness of environmental racism. We believe that individuals need to be aware that an issue exists before they can participate in advocacy and social change.

What is environmental racism?

1. The intentional or unintentional racial discrimination in the enforcement of environmental rules/regulations

2. The intentional or unintentional targeting of minority communities for the location of polluting industries

3. The exclusion of minority groups from public and private boards, commissions, and regulatory bodies

Race/ethnicity is a better predictor of hazardous waste sites than wealth is

The U.S. not only dumps waste in its own minority communities, it ships it's waste off to other countries as well.

  • Im pursuing my PhD in environmental Justice and Environmental Racism, cheers to trying to make this more mainstream. Alot of people dont understand there is an actual term for targeting minority groups with environmental pollution. Cheers for allowing more people to understand.

  • @ashburke1984 That's exactly what we were trying to do, make this topic a bit more easily digestible for all.

  • Me and My group are using this in our project today . . . it goes well with out presentation!!! thanks

That's not racism, it's the NIMBY hypocrisy of liberal elites.

  • @brighterplanet

Calling racism where it doesn't exist is never "fun and youth-friendly" - it's propaganda, plain and simple. The same racially divisive concept has been touted by Obama's former "green jobs" czar, Van Jones, who happens to be a self-avowed Communist.

  • Oh please..... as if there are no white people who live in poverty and all poor minorities keep their own neighborhoods neat as a pin? Hardly. How 'bout starting closer to home and clean up all the home-brew meth labs that turn adults into welfare zombies, or criminals, and pose an immediate and life-long danger to their children - no matter what color they are.
