STAGE SET FOR OPENING OF COMMONWEALTH SUMMIT

The stage is set for the 22nd Commonwealth Summit. This year's theme is 'Building National Resilience, Building Global Resilience.'The three-day Summit will open in the Australian City of Perth on the 28th of this month. The Sri Lankan delegation to the meeting, headed by President Rajapaksa left the island yesterday. On the sidelines of the meeting, the Sri Lankan President is scheduled to have several bilateral discussions with some state leaders. A group of about 3000 persons including Heads of State and representatives of 54 nations will be participating in the sessions.
The first Commonwealth Summit was held in Singapore in 1971. Sri Lanka is a member of the Association from its inception. In addition to the Summit, meetings of senior officials, the business community and youth are also scheduled to be held. The Commonwealth Chairmanship is to be handed over to Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard by Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Parsad, where the 2009 Summit was held.
