So here we were again in Chengdu, Sichuan eating some of the local hot pot. Essentially a giant wok full of hot oil and various chilis and peppers. Being the pepper connoisseurs that we were, we really found it not to be any more spicy than what we get here in Yunnan. In fact, not even as spicy.

  • The reason you thought Hot Pot is not spicy because you picked the soup portion.

  • Actually, it's just not spicy! We're from Yunnan, and here in Yunnan we use a type of chili called "Xiao Mi La" - unfortunately in Sichuan most of the sauce used is oil, while in Yunnan our sauce is all chilis.

    Nevertheless, it was delicious hot pot, and we've since been to Chengdu again several times. It's just not spicy, yet due to so much "hua jiao" being added to Sichuan hot pot, it is quite "ma."

  • so conceited,, ur even gonna post some video of u eating hot-pot on hnoeymoon on utube....

  • It's a video I put up of my wife while we were traveling in Chengdu - is there a problem with this?

  • chong qing hot pot is soooooooooo good

  • What's YUNNAN hotpot ??? is that a spicier deviation from Szechuan hotpot ???

  • @gagsgiggles: if YOU're in China why would YOU expect the Chinese to speak english? And do you think a Chinese menu IN a Chinese restaurant IN CHINA is baffling to the Chinese?

  • Hotpot or hua gua was a great experience. And I tried hotpot in the very same restaurant. Had a hard time convincing the Chinese servers because they dont speak English and a Chinese menu was baffling!

  • ahhh, my mouths on fire ! lol, jk. your wife is cute. if she has a good heart then she surely is a keeper. Greetings from Chiang Mai, Thailand.

  • @moribund112 what's wrong hua jiao, if you have too much hua jiao, then of course it will be too ma, but I loves ma XDDD ...btw myself, my dominican, and indian friend went to chengdu and asked for the spiciest thing they had in every restaurant and were disappointed each and every time =/ 问题是四川菜式不太辣或者是我们应当让个本地人陪我们去吃四川菜 ; ;

  • I have had spicy hotpot in Chengdu, just depends on where you to. My wife prefers it so spicy that I can't eat it. if you go to the hotpot in the shopping mall by the Garden Hotel then it isn't hot at all, but some of the smaller hotpot restaurants serve stuff you can strip paint with.

  • sichuan hot pot is not spicy. its more of like numb. in chinese is MA. so ya.
