QUESTION : Do we really need Bark or Moss to grow healthy orchids? This orchid lost its roots and became dehydrated. If we allowed a good drying out, and the plant had good light and humidity, will it recover and put out new roots?
RIGHT!.
I tried this after I nearly gave up on one orchid that had lost its roots through overwatering. I wanted to dry it out.
I did this 2 months ago and I see the plant has survived and put out new roots and leaf.
I have to confess I was inspired by a video I saw where the orchid is kept in a glass jar filled with stones only.
And also the idea is confirmed by comments by Angeofjusticia ( a viewer). I have saved his brilliant video on saving rootless orchids in my favourites list. ( ``How to save an orchid with`no roots``) He calls it `` Sphag and bag method``. Enjoy!.
Since then I have put the orchid in Sphag and bag and then clay pellets currently. Will update as I see what happens....

  • I was wondering if you can help me out a little about my phal orchid, the root color is reddish orange color what does that mean?

  • @heronsweety sometimes if the roots are in the middle of the orchid pot they may appear yellowish or pale. One way of telling a healthy root from an unhealthy one is to squeeze it and see if it is solid or not. If it is hollow an squishy then it is rotten. If solid and firm , then it is good.

Roots that are exposed to the air look grey and turn green on watering.

    Does this answer your question?

  • Use leca its better mam

  • Thank you so much for the reply it really helps:)

  • @sooneaty as long as the root system does not outgrows the pot you dont need to repot with leca

  • @punish3r0N3 The glassbeads are no good as they hold absolutly no water, you will have to water very often. leca holds some water but they absorbing it slowly so soak them for atleast 15mins. dont use glass your roots will dry

  • @punish3r0N3 How is your orchid doing? If it is not doing well, I suggets you watch the video on sphag and bag method of saving a rootless orchid. I have marked it as one of my favourites `how to save orchids with no roots`. One of my viewers posted his experience on this and it has worked for another viewer.
