A live unrehearsed performance by Dick Cully and his big band of Sammy Nestico's great chart written for Count Basie featuring Joe Trunzo on tenor sax and Teddy Mulet on trumpet for the South Florida TV Show "Something On Seventeen" at the studios of WLRN-TV in Miami, Florida. (THIS WAS A WORKING BAND - 4 gigs a week) IT was NEVER rehearsed and a group in progress. University of Miami and Florida Atlantic University students employed and earning a living. Read what Sammy Nestico has to say:

Dick: I am flabbergasted, thanks ever so much, I am impressed and deeply grateful. Your band is fantastic. I've heard so many renditions of my music that I was disappointed in. I worked shortly with Gene Krupa, and I wrote a couple of things for Buddy Rich ... making it another thing we have in common.

What a treat to hear (and see) your band play my music. I wish to profusely thank you for the many you-tube numbers that you have sent to me. They were fun listening to, but by far the best were from your band. I can't thank you enough.

Good luck with all your music and endeavors.

Sammy Nestico

  • @drumminman49 oh ok. it looked like a young Tim G. seems like he studied jazz bass at Miami in the early 80s late 70s. great band. Thanks ! pleasure to listen to you guys.

  • Awesome. One of the tightest live recordings I've heard of a jazz ensemble on youtube. Great solos too!

  • really great group and it's true, Buddy is living again through Dick Cully. But what year was this recorded, some of your styles look a little dated!

  • im going to play that today with my bigband!! Im so looking forward to it!! Its a great Song!!

  • GREAT!

  • Nice

  • Dick Cully has that effortlessness few drummers have. They just glide through like silk when he moves his hand around his drums. He has proper technique. He learned drumming the right way. You can here Dave weckl in his instructional video a natural evolution, that he learned to play relax in which the result is a bigger sound. When you learn this technique, the sticks come alive.helping you out play beautifully.

  • Wow-Fantastic playing of a really wonderful Nestico chart
