In the movie they actually wouldn't throw the cat, they'd use a green screen, or use special effects to make it look like a cat.

Even if the cat survives, it's still considered animal abuse. Domesticated animals can't adequately protect themselves, and it's their owners' reponsibility to protect them. Throwing a cat off a cliff is definitely not protecting the cat.. :\
