Fishing with Rod: Tagging and recapturing coho salmon

Coho salmon is a pacific salmon species that holds great importance ecologically, culturally, commercially and recreationally. Located in North Vancouver, the Seymour River has a viable run of coho salmon population that is supplemented by the enhancement at the Seymour Salmon Hatchery.

Each summer, volunteers conduct tagging and recapturing program to determine the state of the coho salmon population on the Seymour River. During tagging, gender, origin of the population (hatchery or wild), type of marking are recorded. The data is analyzed at the end of each salmon season to determine the ratio of male and female, wild and hatchery fish. These data play an important role on how the population should be managed.

These footages were shot in July 2003 during one of the tagging days. Each captured fish were tagged by punching two holes on the left gill plate once data were recorded. The tagging ensures that recaptured fish are not recorded again.
