Francisco Tárrega: Recuerdos de la Alhambra, played in a replica 1670 Gellinger clavichord.

I hope that guitarists will excuse me for presuming to try to play this famous guitar piece on the clavichord. No need to chastise me by telling me that it doesn't work so well! Take it as an anomalous novelty, and know that my struggles with the right-hand repeated notes were fitting enough punishment for my presumption. I only recently bought this delightful instrument, and am testing its boundaries. I do not seek to become the Narcisso Yepes of the clavichord (whose performance of this piece on guitar---available here on YouTube---is among my favorites).

The clavichord, by the way, is a replica of Israel Gellinger's 1670 model built in Frankfort. This replica was built by Jack Peters here in Seattle, Washington ( http://www.jackpeters.com ). Except for several bass notes, it is triple fretted. The case is made out of one piece of walnut, and the keyboard is olive wood naturals and ebony accidentals.

  • I'd like listening it at one of your concerts. When are you in Spain? By the way, wonderful melodie and marvellous playng. Congratulations!

  • nice to hear this on other instruments than guitar

  • I am amazed that you can keep the repeated tremolo (as we call it on the guitar) going so well! It's challenging enough on the guitar, but in theory you are still using the same three fingers, so it's the same principal! WOW!

  • Just splendid, Ryan! If you enjoyed working on that, here's another for you to get under your fingers: Albeniz "Asturia," Op. 47, #5. My arrangement fits on a C/E-c3 clavichord. You can find it on groups.yahoo.com, the clavichord group, and it's in "files."

  • I have to admit: I put one of your playlists on autoplay while I was studying and for a moment I'd thought you'd taken up playing the guitar! Very nice.

  • lindo! adorei.... congratulations ryan !

  • Congratulations! Congratulations! Congratulations....

The sound is unique, and the performance really nice.

    Congratulations!

  • Very good!! :O

  • Lovely! What tuning is your clavichord tuned to?

  • Ole!! Gives the old six string a run for its money. Thanks Ryan and Merry Christmas.
