Earth Hour 2009: Maldives President started Earth Hour in Maldives
Maldives is to mark Earth Hour, an annual event organized by World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) to increase the awareness on the effects of global climate change.
Briefing the media on the events planned to mark the Earth Hour, Director General at the Ministry of Housing, Transport and Environment Mohamed Zahir expressed that the main event will be to switching off non essential lights from 2030 hours to 2130 hours on 28 of this month. He called on the public and businesses to turn off to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances during the period to raise awareness towards the need to take action on global climate change. Another special event of the night would be a live music show held at Artificial Beach, he said.
Mohamed Zahir (Meemu Zaviyani) further said security forces would conduct special operations on the streets of Male to counter any disturbance that may occur during darkness caused by switching off lights.
An exhibition organized by environment ministry, and a march led by scouts, their family members and supporters are also to be held in the evening of 28 March. Public is invited to join the march.
More than one billion people world wide is expected join in and switch off non essential lights and minimize electricity usage, WWF has revealed.
According to Maldives Scout Association, the main organizers of events to mark the day in Maldives, private companies have declined to provide support and funding to support the activities. Scout Association said the decline may be an attempt to politicize the events and reiterated that event was not a political event.
