Only reason Bungie doesn't let you do it over Xbox live is because they're worried that players can find exploits using the combo in matchmaking.

@reddeadspartan Halo 3 won't go down till the next Xbox console comes out. When Halo 3 Falls so will Reach. As well as Halo 4 on account that it will be on Xbox 360 and not a new one. Although the chances that they will shut them down as soon as a new console comes out are slim and will probably be held for a few years like with the original Xbox servers.
