Bata Drumming by John Santos

In this video lesson John Santos demonstrates playing technique for LP bata drums. He shows how to play each of the three drums: small or Oconcolo bata, medium or Itolele bata, and large or Iya bata, while on a stand. He also creates a composite technique that projects a wide variety of rhythms and tones.

The names of the Bata drums still very much portray the Yoruba language and culture from Nigeria.. the names.. Oconcolo is synonymous with the Yoruba word for small- "Konkolo"; Itolele is from the phrase "Eyi to tele" meaning "the next one" or the one that follows; and of course "Iya" means Mother.. like the biggest of them all!
