Driving through the NE 60th MAX station to give an example of visibility problems at the pedestrian crossing. Filmed on a drizzly evening from inside a van. Camera position, focal length, and exposure set to approximate human eye. Station area lighting is low with exposed bulbs which cause glare and distraction, while inadequately lighting the actual sidewalk and crosswalk area. The station is a "hump", with the crosswalk at the top, which is not visible to motorists until a very short distance, even at below the legal speed limit. (A single yellow sign in each direction is present, but that is it.) For southbound travelers, pedestrians leaving the station cannot be viewed because of a wall at the crosswalk, and for northbound travelers, the view is sometimes obscured by buses waiting at the station. The neighborhood association is requesting improvements to the station which may include pedestrian-activated flashing signage, a slightly realigned crosswalk, better (less glare) and brighter station area lighting, and improved signage.
