It took me a couple of days too figure out and now I have the answer. I never thought of just searching it up or using Youtube (WTF!)...
Note that I'm using the Sony Vegas 8.0 Movie Studio (cheapest / simplest one available at the time).

there's another way:
import file(fullscreen if course)
go to Event Pan/Crop
select 16:9 aspect ratio
and there you go

i have just the way you do but its not widescreen
maybe if i recorded my videos in widescreen on my tv, that might work
