Back in December 2004 I got a small grant to take photos and video in Laos and my friend Jim Harris came and took video for me. We visited Sam Neua because I had sponsored a Book Box Training for fifteen teachers who were getting book box libraries that both Jim and I had raised money for from various groups. You can see the videos of the training on our YouTube channel. But in this video we were walking around the morning market and you can see how cold it can get in Sam Neua, sometimes close to freezing! The morning market is no longer on this side of the river and now you have to walk further up the road and then cross a bridge to get to the new market. But we always love going to the market because there are a variety of tribal groups who come (Hmong, Mien, Tai Daeng, etc.) and there's lots of interesting things for sale and in this video you can see where I actually was able to buy a nice embroidered Hmong school bag from a mother, whose daughter had been carrying the bag. With the money I paid they can buy several new bags and have extra money left over and I now have a bag I treasure.
