What he uses is an old latin phrase spoken to the deceased.
It is from this phrase that the "R.I.P" comes from. As it was once believed that all ended up in hell, and judgement would pass only when the end of the world approached.
If one had R.I.P written on ones tomb, you could be judged. If you didn't, well then it would really suck.
