Dogfight: SPITFIRE vs. MUSTANG

A quick one on one dogfight between a Spitfire plane and the P-51 Mustang.

The game isn't FSX, its IL-2 Sturmovik 1946. I was flying the spitfire.

The P-51 is in no way a copy of the Spitfire, the only similiarity between them is that they both use versions of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine.

The Spitfire is a rather short ranged defensive interceptor fighter whereas the P-51 is a long range offensive bomber escort fighter.

The Mustang is quite a lot faster than the Spitfire especially at high altitudes whereas the Spitfire has the advantage in climb- and turnrate

There is a reason why the Mustang is better than the Spitfire.  The Mustang was used as a long range escort and could go to Berlin and back. The Spitfire was an interceptor and couldn't go to Berlin. Didn't have the range. The Spitfire was lighter, had better range, and was designed to replace the Spitfire. The only thing they shared was the engines the Rolls-Royce Merlin. With the Mustang being the escort bomber casualty rates went down 75%. That's pretty huge.

@blazer666del are you sure that statistic is right? I thought the Hurricane shot down more enemy aircraft in the Battle of Britain, not the war.

@lemonite1 the 109 was the most produced plane of the war on either side, thats about it. 109 is weak in a right hand turn, between the hellcat, mustang, spit and thunderbolt the germans didn't enjoy very many kills :P

As someone's already said, the P-51 had the range. Really, they aren't comparable aircraft - they were designed to do wildly different things. In a way, the two of them were beautifully complementary to one another. If either of them had not existed, the war could well have been lost.

It's also interesting to note how different the P-51 looks to many other US fighter aircraft of the time - because it was originally designed to a british specification, using a very different design philosophy.
