Chinatown, Honolulu is a popular shopping destination for both locals and tourists. It's hard to beat the low prices for fruit, fish, meat and veggies. Shops open early in the morning and close early in the afternoon. But what is Chinatown like at night, when the shoppers are gone? My friend offered to take me to a place where there's fun and free food after dark. Sounded good, so off we went...

I didn't name the market because the pressure from the video would make them clean up their act. At this point, the story has been covered very thoroughly in the press (visible if one Googles).

The Hawaii Dept of Health still will not authorize overtime, so no nighttime visits to the other markets have or likely will take place. So there's nothing saying that the rat problem was confined to one market, just that they're the ones who left their lights on at night in front of an open window.

Our bodies are constantly besieged by unwanted organisms which set off a chain of events in our immune systems to take care of it. I had a disgusting roommate for a month who didn't wash his hands after handling raw meat. Grossed me out (I'm vegan) but I never became sick. Personally, I'd rather have animal urine or feces on my food than Monsanto toxins.

Now that you have scrubbed the peal, what do you do about the rat pee that is inbedded inside the actual fruit itself?

    Just curious?

Since the posting of the video, the market was named. Business in Chinatown was said to have dropped 50-60%. Finally, the market was cleaned up.

The farmers markets are not in Chinatown--do visit, in particular, the KCC Farmers Market on Saturday. Try some of the papayas from the Big Island or the smaller apple bananas. There's lots of good food here, not to mention some of the best chefs in the world. Enjoy your trip.

I can't believe how calm this guy is about it. Those are rats basically living in food that people buy and eat. And he didn't want to call out the owners??? At least name the people so unsuspecting travelers can have a heads up. I'm going to Honolulu in a month and now don't think ill be shopping at any international and farmers markets. Gross!

They're actually cute, if you've ever owned a rat (I have). Intelligent creatures. My kama'aina fiance would put food outside his home in Honolulu, away from the door, for the cockroaches. And thus they stayed away from the interior. Noho ana like ka nohona (live in harmony).

It's impossible to eradicate pests in a tropical or otherwise food oriented place but especially in warm weather. There are certain things I do with my fruits & veggies because regardless of where they come from, a rat could have peed on my bananas in Venuzuela, a cockroack dropped feces on my grapes and who knows what with my garlic from China. I use 35% hydrogen peroxide, just a few drops, washing every fruit & veggie, plus fruit wash & an ozonator sometimes.
