Saint Elmo´s Fire is created by static generated by clouds and is an electro-luminescent discharge caused by the ionization of the air during thunderstorms inside of a strong electric field. The video shows what happens in the cockpit window and you can hear the background static that comes out of the communication radio.
St. Elmo's fire is named after St. Erasmus of Formiae (also called St. Elmo), the patron saint of sailors. The phenomenon sometimes appeared on ships at sea during thunderstorms, and was regarded by sailors with religious awe, accounting for the name
