This historic recording has been kindly put at my disposal by YouTuber
HughJason for the delight and pleasure of all other poetry lovers on YouTube.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge - The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Voices:

Richard Burton - the mariner
Robert Hardy - the wedding guest
John Neville - narrator

The recording year is not clear but the cassette states that this and some other recordings are in mono. Elsewhere is referred to the years of the 'original sound' which are 1955, 1965 and 1978. So my conclusion is that 1955 as recording year for 'The Mariner' is a good guess.

I did not bother to illustrate the upload with video material or stills. The poem is powerful enough to speak for its own without any video support.

In view of the length of the poem I had to make three uploads which I refer to as 'upload 1 -2 and 3, not *part* 1-2 and 3, this to avoid confusion with the various parts of the poems which are also subdivided in 'parts I up to VII'.

  • An excellent rendition, thanks for sharing but I think that the Wedding Guest is John Gielgud, not Robert Hardy.

This is what I find on the net:

  • We just read this in my English class... I think I'm the only person who really loved and appreciated it. It's sad that kids these days don't care about beautiful poetry like this...

  • Sorry Mike, it is John Neville, I have an original copy of this on tape

    regards

  • I fucking LOVE Richard Burton

  • Thank you so much for putting this up! I don't think it's ever been released on CD, and the cassette versions are incredibly expensive. I once came across this at a local library, on a cassette called A Richard Burton Anthology of Classic Poetry.

  • @harley75604 So did mine in 1967. Still tears in my eyes.

  • Alienation and reentry.

  • Extremely emotional experience to hear this deeply moving poem read. Please remember the moral: respect for ALL of God's creation.

  • My senior high school English teacher played this on a recored player player in my class. I loved it. That was in 1970. I have always loved this poem.
