The U.S. Men's National Team defeated Jamaica 2-0 in the quarterfinal of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. Jermaine Jones and Clint Dempsey scored for the USA.

Someone please explain to me. How was Donovan offsides when the Jamaican DEFENDER was all the way up in in the goal. Excuse me, but isn't being offsides when you're AHEAD of the LAST DEFENDER when you don't have the ball. Clearly Donovan didn't have the ball, but he was not ahead of the LAST defender. Unless there's an exception to it, then by all means someone please do explain.

US plays well against other CONCACAF teams, but they need to raise their level to be able to play on a more or less equal footing against the more established soccer powerhouses (Germany, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina etc). Hopefully they'll get there within 6 or 7 years.

@RndmPplPrsn Well the way you worded the 1st sentence is really confusing. You said "it's the last guy, not just the goalie"...that's very confusing because offsides is if you are in front of the 2nd to last guy.

I'm a US fan and I've got respect for Ricketts. He played great. that first goal wasn't his fault. He couldn't do much about the second goal. I like him, he's got class. Of course Tim Howard is better though.

@wadeownslbjkobe bedoya dived against Panama clearly, and Agudelo dived against Chile and earned a PK last year.

@RndmPplPrsn It's not the last man for offsides, it's the 2nd to last man. Usually the last man is the goalie and the 2nd to last man is a defender, but in this case, the defender was the last man and the goalie was the 2nd to last man. Donovan was ahead of the 2nd to last man and thus it was an accurate call on the offsides.
For another example, @STLRULES, look for highlights of Mexico/South Africa - the 1st game in last year's World Cup. There was exactly the same situation on a Mexico goal

@STLRULES according to the rule it states that the player is offside when they are behind the last defender... it never specifies which player it is... so when the goalie came out and the defender went in goal the goalie became the "last defender" and the other player in goal became the goalie... its a technicality thing and how it is worded does it make sense?

People, shut up about Jones' "dive". There is a clip on this website that shows Jones did in fact get clipped slightly, and when you're running as fast as Jones was, the slightest touch can throw you off. I think he might have embelished, but he was caught by Jermaine Taylor.

Jones should've just continued for the chance of the goal instead of just diving. Would've been a better chance than a freaking free kick! I was so mad!
