Tank has been up for 3 months, I did use some sand and rock out of 2--55 gallon tanks I had going in my house. One of the 55 gallons was up and running for about 5 years and the other was up for only 3 months befor I came accross this large tank and combined them in to this one. I then asked all of the shops in the area to give my number out to people wanting to take their tanks down. Over a few months obtained 400 lbs of rock to add to the 300 I already had and I was able to obtain from one person about a 1000 dollars worth of pre owned fish. My cost was $1000 total for the used rock and fish plus $1000 for the tank, stand, 2 emporer 400's, 2 fluval 404's, 4 power heads, 2 heaters, 2--250 watt sub compact saltwater light units, 1--250 watt T5 HO saltwater light unit, an Oceanic sump and some other odds and ends ALL USED. My cost so far $2000. I am sure that it was a little more for salt, filter media, clamps and such but I did not keep track of that stuff. To get the sump and a 55 gallon refugium tank going I needed some custom over flow box's that Lifereef is making for me. Those are a bit pricey at $550 for 4x600gallon box's for a planned total of 2400 gallons of flow. I also will have to buy a pump yet. Total cost will be around $3000 over 3 months. Future plan's are upgrade one of the subcompact light units to a T5 HO unit and move the one of the sub compact units down to the refugium, then I am going to build a canopy to contain all the light that spills out over the top. My vidio does not do justis on how bright the light is from this tank.

  • ok so how does the water work. if you use tap water then you need to contition it. then you gotta mix the salt. im just wondering cause i just got a 2 gallon freshwater lol and u just add water contitioner. how does it work with these bigger tanks?

  • City water has algie spoors, cilica, copper, and many other items that will add up over time. My tank evaporates 2.5 gallons a day! thats 912 gallons a year that has to be topped off. The bad items in water stay in the tank an build up over time. If you use water that is not DI or RO you will kill alot of fish. Once in a while topping off with water out of the tap will not hurt but all of the time will cause you head achs. I buy my water and change it every 10 days 50 gallons at a time.

  • I have been talking with my local shop about selling the above set up and going bigger. What I am thinking is 4 215 gallon tanks in a loop. 3 of them will run into the 4 tank being a common sump. This way I can have 3 different types of environments, Reef, large critter, and a tank that will have non reef safe fish and critters that could not live with the large fish. 2 of the tank will be on top side by side the other 2 will be side by side below. one of the lower ones being the sump.

  • spectacular! it must cost you arms and legs!

  • I buy the water from the local shop then mix it at home in a 96 gallon plastic yard waste can. I buy the salt by the case. If you buy it this way every 4th bag is free. If I average the cost of salt, water,Ph buffer and Vit and minerals cost, it comes out to $120 month. This is changing 50 gallons of water every 10 days. It is mostly a fish only tank and that is why I can get away with only changing the water every 10 days. What also helps is the amount of rock I have helps biologically clean

  • You could really make something nice out of this big tank! Were are the corals? Just rocks look a little dead.... (and the clownfish would enjoy a anemone or something similar).

  • @erazor20001 when this vid was posted it was the end of the first stage, their wher no coral in the tank becouse the used rock had parasites and aptasia glass anemonies all over the rock. The natural criters that eat these pests also eat coral so if I had put corals o in the tank they would have been eaten by the benificial criters I added to eat all the bad pests. The tank is now 100 % clean of pest and all off the rock is covered in spong and coraline algie.

  • awsome video i love fish i LOVE clown fish i love your colection of fish

  • @belsole37 The filter you want is the biggest that will fit below the tank if their is a cabinet. Sump style are the best. Their R many factors. My tank does not need a filter due to the amount of rock I have. All I need is wate flowing around the tank over the rock. Call me 14058636671

  • Hey we just got a 250 gallon tank for the dive shop. What size filter would you suggest
