Abia state government has accepted to implement the new minimum wage of 18,000 naira to public servants on its payroll.
Governor Theodore Orji stated this at the Nnamdi Azikiwe secretariat, Umuahia while addressing the workers.
Identifying the state civil service as his primary constituency and the engine room of government, Orji implored the workers to exhibit loyalty, patriotism, discipline and shun corruption.
Orji, who said the implementation of the new minimum wage would commence as soon as the circular comes out, appealed to the workers to support his re-election bid to enable him continue to impact positively on the state public service.
The governor disclosed that state government recommended N45, 000 as workers minimum wage to the Federal Government, when the issue came up for discussion at the council of state's meeting to ensure that workers adequately cater for.
He explained that his administration has been worker friendly as it does not owe any salary arrears, adding that his government has never placed any embargo on workers' promotion. He also express his gratitude to all Abians once again for coming out to vote last Saturday 9th April 2011, in spite of the initial postponement. "I humbly urge you again to come out on Saturday 16th April 2011 to vote massively for President Goodluck Jonathan (PDP) and on the 26th of April. With him we are sure of transformation of Nigeria and greater Federal Presence in our dear State.
This is plain stupidity. Abia is a government in its own right and should implement 45,000. Why is he boasting of 18,000. I expected him to say that minimum wage in Abia is now 45,000. The federal minimum wage is minimum, not maximum wage, that means each state can set it own minimum wage above the several one. Why is he tying the wage to votes, don't workers deserve their pay? Don't they deserve the privilege of individual consciences?
