With a savvy mixture of humor and poignance, writer Anthony D'Aries recounts the drama surrounding a letter his father penned while a soldier in Vietnam in this, the second excerpt from his completed memoir Aural History. D'Aries, a graduate of Emerson College who completed an MFA at the University of South Maine's Stonecoast writing program, and the 2010 PEN New England Discover Award winner in nonfiction, was an Emerging Writer-in-Residence at Randolph College in the spring of 2011. His February 2 reading was part of Randolph's on-going Visiting Writer Series — a program curated by professors Bunny Goodjohn, James Peterson, and Laura-Gray Street dedicated to bringing a diverse group of established and up-and-coming writers of prose and poetry to Randolph students, as well as to the greater Lynchburg community. D'Aries' work has appeared in Solstice Magazine and a section of Aural History will be published later this year in The Literary Review. His work is also featured in the Pinchback Press anthology Tarnished: True Tales of Innocence Lost.
