"AraMitetanone"
Composed by Syousuke Ichikawa
Performed by
Yuichi Onoue(尾上祐一) - Handmade Ribbon Controller
Kengo Sakamoto(坂元健吾) - Fretless Bass
Junzo Tateiwa(立岩潤三) - Drums

Live on Dec 17th 2011 at Tokyo

This song is Japanese female Enka singer - Harumi Miyako's hit song in middle of 60's in Japan.

Onoue plays handmade ribbon controller.
It can change a oscillator pitch smoothly, depending on the place which you press down. It was originally made as a kind of MOOG SYNTHESIZER's controller in late 60's. I made this following its example. And playing style is self-taught.

  • Now you're talking! Really liked that one. This is of course majorly different than the original hit version, no? I never heard the composition before, but if it was able to sound anything like this in the Sixties ~ that is very cool.

The ribbon controller is an excellent device. Are they expensive or difficult to make?

There is video footage somewhere of Brian Wilson playing what looks to be one of these on "Good Vibrations". I always assumed it was a theremin. Are they close in principal?

  • @quieterrps Hi thanks for your kind words. Brian Wilson played "Electro-Theremin" on "Good Vidration" footage. It is very confusable, because "Electro-Theremin" is different from "Theremin" , and It is rather almost the same as ribbon controller. Electro-Theremin and Ribbon controller are touch-playing instruments. But Theremin is non-touch-playing instrument. Please refer "Theremin" and "Electro-Theremin" on wikipedia for detail.
