Hi iprep87:
I am Mien (aka Yao which is the name used to refer to Mien people in China). I think for the hmong, miao is the term used in China to refer to them? I may be wrong.
Mien is not a part of the hmong cultural branch and do not fall under the some sub-group of hmong. Rather they fall under the same catergory as ethnic minorities of China...Mien and Hmong are quite different, please don't wrongfully assume hmong as the overarching category for ethnic groups in China.

Hi iprep87:
one more thing, there are over 50 ethnic minority groups in China, and Mien and hmong are just two out of the bunch. It wouldn't be right for me or you to say any of the groups are under mine or your group's cultural branch. You just can't simply say hmong is the overarching cultural branch for these ethnic groups. It's like saying every group doesn't have their own culture when in reality they really do have distinct cultures unparallell to hmong.
Thanks

@olylifter69kg When I was studying in Fudan University, a research team of the department of Anthropology conducted a reseach of the Y-chromosome of the minorities and people with rare surnames. I volunteered and took part in the project.

It is considered that their language and culture have been also affect by the southern minorities, too. Such kind of influnce might be bidirectional. For example, it is hard for the researchers to analyse the relationship between the She language and Hakka language now. Ha means guest in Chinese. Because they moved from the north, to natives, they are guests.

Hakka is a dialect of Han Chinese. He move to south from the center of the China more than a thousand years ago for all kinds of reason, maily wars. After the residence in the central China has been influnced by the northern nomads. They still keep the tradition of the old days.

@gxbhb That's cool. I know a Hakka person in America. What is Hakka? It seems like she speaks Chinese because everywhere we went in Hong kong, she spoke it well.

She people live in Fujian, east of Guangdong and south of Zhengjiang. She people in east of Guangdong are most like us. They were once recognized as Yao. But then changed into She. But they live beside hakka, their language has been affected a lot. Only some basic words remain the same.

I am only half Yao... My mother is Zhuang. So they seldom tell me about that. But my grandfather asked me not to eat dog, cat and snake, which I thought might be the custom. I read about these in book, though.
I have my Y chromosome tested last year. I am M-7, haha, the most representative type of Hmong-Mienh. Could you help me upload a Yao video? There was always somethings wrong when I uploaded. I sent you message, but you didn't reply...

@gxbhb Also, Where do She people live? and Do you know of any videos that capture She dialogue?
Hey wait the minute! That's NO Mao?!! That's the Yao people and they are known as Mien people. Thank you! :-)
