I actually think the show reinvented itself well at times over the last ten years - given, sometimes it became soapy to the point of being ridiculous - but I honestly feel that for much of the past decade, the show has been a genuinely strong police drama. It hasn't been the same since the Don Beech Scandal, but then, it wouldn't be - six characters, including long servers Beech, Boulton, Deakin and Brownlow, were all removed - but it that didn't stop it from still being a good show.
Beech was a good cop durng the classic era, it was dissapointing to see the writers get rid of Beech, by making him out to be a corrupt officer. After 1997, The Bill became The Dill, it was such a dissapointment. This ultimately led to the begining of the end for the bill, which came to ahead this year.
I agree with you! I wasn't so much into the soap part but it's continual change was interesting to see. There's a reason it won a BAFTA in 2008.

beech was in the bill in 1997 james,
i think the fact he was corrupt is what made the bill...
the moment he went to aus the bill fell to bits and so they made (beech is back) that was great too,
but the bill just could not cope with the loss of don beech....
the bill ended as a tv series the moment ds beech performed his last act.
him an ds boulton also had great episodes...but to lose beech, boulton, and cid,
itv's the bill (no chance of carrying on)
