There are subtle differences between different release prints of "Tommy." In Jack Nicholson's scene the shots are flipped for awhile and there's a frame jump on Oliver Reed's face, and in "We're Not Gonna Take It" there are extra frames. This also shows the difference between the composition of the frame top and bottom with, and without, letterbox mattes

  • TonyDood from imdb of course, ha ha...

  • Thanks for the comments--yeah, I was going to do some more of this if anyone showed any interest, although I have to find a better way to display the two screens... (you wouldn't happen to be "wehoSteve" woodja?) :)

  • Ann Margaret is too hot.

  • There seems to be some picture cropping for the Champagne scene too. The pan & scan version we see more on the top & bottom but the left and right sides are cut off. Vice versa for the widescreen version.

  • Hello monkynmee57, aka TonyDood. I posted this question on IMDb, but I'll post it here also: Do you what possessed them to flip the image in part of Jack Nicholson's "Doctor" scene? And which one was correct the original or the remaster?

  • Haha! Had a feeling!

  • mmmmmm...possibly...who wants to know? LOL

  • Oh! And there's a shot in some prints of Frank and Nora returning home before Frank runs upstairs to confront Ernie. This was on the early VHS and (non letterbox) laserdisc.

  • I've always felt that the widescreen version was better framed, depspite the fact that some picture information is cut off. I guess it was picture information that wasn't meant to be seen to begin with. The close-up shots are really close-up this way.

  • amazing
