A child born with spina bifida has an opening in the spine
as a result of the spinal column not closing completely during the first month of pregnancy.
Surgery is usually performed to close the opening in the child's back.
Spina bifada can range from being so mild that a person may not even know they have it, to more severe with some degree of paralysis and loss of sensation below the damaged vertebrae.
Most children with spina bifida can live normal, active lives.
