I'm going to get you BuckHollywood! So what if I lost 3 games to you already... this time you are dead! Now where is that QI when I need it?

Oh, hi.. sorry... playing Words With Friends here and I destroy everyone that I play EXCEPT for Michael Buckley.. Mr. BuckHollywood!! I think he cheats!

Oh.. I'm supposed to do a lesson here! Sorry.

Hello my dear students.. and hello Teacher Andrew's 6th grade class at Jih Jen Elementary School in Taiwan (I hope it's pronounce YIH YEN!)..
Congratulations on graduating!!

You have graduated from 6th grade.. that means 6th grade is over for you.. so does graduate mean something is over? Or does graduate mean you accomplished something? Hmm..

HotForWords must investigate the word Graduate! As soon as I finish this game with Michael!

Buckhollywood beat me by 55 points! What kind of word is Drub!

Oh, I'm doing a lesson here, sorry!

The word graduate is funny in that it means the successful completion of a program or study.. but it didn't always mean that.

Graduate comes from the pp of the Latin graduari which means "to take a degree" and that comes from the Latin gradus for degree.

So to graduate originally meant "to take a degree"

But as we learned in an earlier video, to take a degree originally meant to ENTER college.. and a DEGREE represented the steps one took while IN college.

Only later did a degree refer to the COMPLETION of all the necessary steps to earn your diploma.

Well, Graduate took a similar turn as degree. In the old days, you GRADUATED the second you entered school!! But then you had to take all the classes for the rest of the year to get your diploma.

Wow.. that's a bummer.. why couldn't they just have kept graduation as the first day of class, then the rest of the year could be for fun!! Right?

But we wouldn't end up learning anything that way.. so I guess moving graduation to the end of the year was a good idea after all!

For your homework, when was the last graduation you celebrated? Oh, and again, congratulations to Teacher Andrew's grade 6 class for graduating!!
What the Buck, I'm going to get you!  Oh.. if you want to play be on Words with Friends, I am hotforwords, all lower case.. but I warn you.. I will kick your butt!!

  • you are really sexy ¬¬ hahaha... and good video...

  • Last time I graduated was at college and what is more insightful is that graduation at the largest private school in America is something we called "commencement (which means to begin!)" Figuring, that after our schooling was over, now our education would really begin--meaning life itself!
