Quartet handbell playing Two Short Pieces - Hearing the Bells; Listening to the Rain (Composed by Sierra Tse) at Musicarama concert 2008.

Hearing the Bells
Hong Kong Handbell Academy Quartet (Emily Li, Joyce Lo, Sandy Yeung, Christine Chan)
Kunqu masterpiece The Palace of Eternity, written by the poet and playwright Hong Sheng(1645-1704), is about the love story between the Tang Dynasty Emperor Ming and his favorite consort Lady Yang. Hearing the Bells is inspired by the 29th episode Wen Ling(the chiming bells). It describes the emperor, in deep sorrow and guilt after the death of Lady Yang, taking shelter from the rain in a tower, hearing the sounds of bell chimes through the rain, which drove him to deeper despair. This composition employs a new handbell technique: "singing bells" to create a sorrowful atmosphere. It also quotes several melodies from Kunqu which are painted with the colors of bells and chime, in order to explore the sound between tradition and contemporary sonorities.
