The Bauhaus teachers called themselves master instead of professor. Renowned inhabitants included Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Lyonel Feininger, Georg Muche, Laszlo Moholy, Johannes Itten and Oskar Schlemmer.
The Bauhaus master's houses belong to the world heritage. the houses are semi-detached. Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky were once roof mates and expressed their creativity to their heart's desire. The architectural firm of Gropius designed the houses, so Gropius was on his own a two-earner household. After a period of some agony under the East German regime, the houses have now been completely restored and opened to the public.
The houses were delivered in 1926 when the first inhabitants hauled their belongings inside. Many of the things adorning the interior were designed by the Bauhaus and manufactured in their own workshops. Three of the four houses survived the Second World War; though the detached house of Gropius himself did not make it.
The Masters' Houses now serve the noble aim of hosting exhibitions.
In the house where painter Lyonel Feininger used to live, the Kurt Weill centre is now established, and in the Kandinsky-Klee house one can now admire an exhibition about the last director of Bauhaus: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
On the chair designed by himself, with his ever-present cigar close by, he looks back at an eventful life of which the final echoes can be heard from Wassily Kandinsky's adjacent room.
