Sunny skies, dramatic sunsets and moon lighting really add to the beauty of watching trains in the country-side: beautiful weather kicks off the new year with a lot of exciting train action on the NS Harrisburg Line, with two clips from the NS Buffalo Line, of 12 trains, including Conrail, rail trains, newly purchased SD60's, Canadian Pacific haulage rights train 159 and the East Penn Railways Lancaster and northern on trackage rights over NS.

On 12/22/11, the sun starts to set as CP 159 heads north on the NS Buffalo Line on a rare daylight run about an hour from home rails, with a leased pair of locomotives, "blue-bird" CEFX SD40-2 3186 and CEFX SD40-2 2786, which retains the shell of the SD45 in its past life.

14G passes by a happy group of cattle on a beautiful Christmas Eve 2011. Trailing behind the leader, NS ES40DC 7609, is a recently purchased SD60 renumbered from Helm to NS 6542, which still retains Union Pacific Yellow.

On a very blustery 12/26/11, 34A heads west with a nice forward-facing mostly EMD consist. NS SD60 6715, NS D9-40CW 9763, NS SD60I 6747, NS GP38-2 5614, and NS SD40-2 3341. There is also an entire empty Steelton (SPSX) rail train on the rear!

The second sun of the New Year 2012 starts to set as 33A heads east through the country-side with a solid EMD lashup, NS SD70M 2617, NS SD70 2572, NS SD60 6715(?) and NS GP38-2 5614(?).

The PRL, East Penn's Lancaster and Northern Train, with U23B 2204 runs long-hood-forward out of NS Reading Yard on the High-line heading for home rails in Sinking Spring on 12/28/11, yes, I accidently added this clip in non-chronological order to the rest.

31T crosses the Appalachian Trail at SOUTH FERRY, which still has Pennsy Position Lights, on the NS Buffalo Line with a short train pulled by NS ES40DC 7554, NS SD60 6645, and NS SD70M-2 2660.

34A heads through WYOMISSING JUNCTION on a nice sunny 1/06/12 with NS D8-40CW 8322, NS D9-40CW 9975, NS GP38-2 5121, and NS SD60 6540, which was recently purchased from HLCX and retains the blue Helm paint scheme.

19G heads west in the golden light on 1/06/12 with a pair of NS D9-40CW's 9886 and 9570. A waning gibbous moon shines bright in the sky, and the sun sets shortly after the train passes, just before 33A comes east with NS D9-40CW 9759, NS SD60M 6795, and NS GP38-2 5244. Note: the sun setting on the horizon is in real time. Also, if you look closely at the moon, you can see the rotation of the earth causing the moon to move out of the center of my shot.

No video would be complete without some Conrail, so, here is NS SD40-2 3405 in Conrail Can-opener leading the H33 local toward PACMA on 1/09/12, unfortunately, NS GP40-2 3001 was recently repainted, but not to worry, I have over a two dozen shots of 3001 in blue.

On 1/10/12, the 93M rail train ties down on AES siding just east of PRESCOTT as 19G heads west into a nice, low shining sun on the long straight stretch between the 81 signals and milepost 83. It is rare to see any form of train on AES siding, so this made for the perfect meet. 19G has NS D9-40CW 9643, NS SD70M-2 2714, and NS GP40-2 3022. The rail train has NS GP40-2 3034 and NS SD40-2 3353 and is done for the day, but we catch the train heading east the following day (1/11/12) under the symbol 94M.

It was difficult selecting the scenes from the past 4 weeks of railfanning while keeping the time as short as possible, there are a lot more clips that I wanted to share, but don't worry, I'm making further progress on setting up the equipment necessary to produce copies of DVD's/Blu-rays, and I really hope this will be the year for production. If you enjoyed this presentation, there are plenty of exciting thing to be found down the line!

I hope you enjoyed!

Thanks for watching!

  • Eric, outstanding job buddy. We need to get a good trip in, and Im talking outside the HARL. Sorry I havent been in touch lately, ive been insanely busy. But we definitely need to plan a nice trip sometime this year or at least get some HARL and RDG lines and points west in

  • @Hickler90

Oh man, I just want to go everywhere, if only time and money allowed it. So...see you in the Sierra Mountains in May? Haha, just kidding of course, but we'll make some pretty awesome trips this summer—I hope!

  • Do you have website where I can buy your DVDs? I love your work, and I actually use it as ambient noise, instead of forest sounds.

  • @fightingwolf18

It's a long process in the works, hopefully some day (this year) yes, but being heavily involved in college work, it's a staggering process. Of course, as time passes, the footage inclines with value, so even if it takes me 5 years to get into production (which I hope not), the footage will be that much more valuable, because railroads change everyday as history slowly sinks into the mantle.
