Don't be so defensive. Squall has great brave attacks, so beat him up with them. That being said, don't be reckless either.
Use your ex-mode too. Squall has one of the best ex-modes in the game(double hits plus more range plus more criticals). Attacking Bartz while he is in ex-mode is dangerous, but don't be so afraid of Goblin Punch that you waste your own awesome ex-mode.
Also, try to stay on the ground more. Squall has a lot more options there.
