Menasha police are crediting an officer and a good Samaritan with pulling a woman from a burning minivan, and the entire incident was caught on police dashboard camera video.
Officers were called to a one-vehicle crash at the intersection of Racine and Fourth streets around 5:20 a.m. Tuesday. When Officer Matt Lenss arrived, he saw that the minivan was burning and the driver, a 51-year-old Menasha woman, was unconscious inside.
Because of the fire and damage from the crash, Lenss could not reach the woman from the driver's side of the van. He broke open the window, and with the help of a bystander, pulled the woman out.
"Any other officer at this department would have done the same thing," said Lenss. "I just happened to be the first one on scene."
"Very proud and excited for what he had done and the way his response was very quick, prompt and potentially live saved a life," said Chief Tim Styka of Officer Lenss. "There's also the other side of it that concerns me greatly that we could have watched a video of a horrific event, instead of what turned out to be a very positive one."
The woman was taken to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, where she was treated and released.
Police believe a medical condition led to the crash. The crash is still under investigation.
