BLACK JACK DAVID
(Smith)
WARREN SMITH (SUN 250, 1956)

Black Jack David come around through the woods
Singing so loud and merry
His voice kept a-ringing through the green, green trees
He spied a fair-haired maiden
He spied a fair-haired maiden

Would you forsake your husband, dear
Would you forsake your baby
Would you forsake your fine, fine home
And go with a Black Jack David
Go with Black Jack David?

No dear Jack I can not go
Away and leave my baby
I can not forsake my husband and home
And go with you Black Jack David
Go with you Black Jack David

Listen dear lass, my name is Jack
I've come from afar
Looking for a fair-haired lass like you
Won't you come and be my bride
Come and be my bride

Yes, I'll forsake my husband, dear
And I'll forsake my baby
I'll forsake my fine, fine home
And go with you Black Jack David
Go with you Black Jack David

Last night she slept on a fine, feathered bed
Beside her husband and baby
Tonight she slept on the cold, cold ground
Beside old Black Jack David
Beside old Black Jack David

  • Great song. Got this on a 45 rpm with 3 push marks some one more who has that

  • @lowellgrippo Yes, I think Hank Williams vocal style is here for sure. :)

  • i have this on a 45 still play it

  • I love the ISB's version, which has a real Cajun flavor. I sing and play it on concertina. Thanksfor the recommendation hydfawr.

  • @magmcq Theres a great version of Black Jack Davy by The Incredible String Band on the 1970 album I looked Up,if you fancy checking it out? Good luck.

  • This song traveled all over the British Isles before coming to America. I heard a cowboy version on a New Mexico ranch a couple years back. It's a great song, and I like Warren's version a whole lot more than I expected to! Thanks for posting.

  • I think this is an old british folk song.this is a good version though,Warren Smith has always been magic.

  • i love this song :')

  • I love this song me and my grannie were singin it today :)

  • Do I detect Hank Williams' influence in his vocal style? Thanks for posting!
