  • Not to discount the bravery of the crew of Yamato. Enemy or not, they had some nuts to do what they did, knowing they weren't coming home. R.I.P.

  • Does it cost anything to go into the museum?

  • @Bullettube AA shells its all tracking speed....Japanese 5 inch secondard was big enough but too slow to be really effective and a gigantic 18.1 inch turret lacks speed and large naval guns certainly to not have the elevation especially inside 5 mile range.... Yamato class too important to Japanese Navy to risk such a hot charge....even inside AA Shell it still have to be stored inside Magazines and one little boom and good bye...especially after Mutsu afair I doubt they would allow it..

  • @crpdst2003 Was it topex that was used in the 18in anti-aircraft shells? I read once that this was a possible cause of the explosion. The shells were supposed to generate a great deal of heat, hurling thousands of white-hot fragments through the air. I would think that this type of shell would have been better for the 6in guns as they had a 55 degree elevation. I suppose the idea of shooting the huge 18in shells in front of approaching torpedo planes would have made some sense.

  • I would very much like to make over to Japan one these days and visit this museum. I have always had an interest in the Yamato since I was a kid. I had an old Lindberg kit of the battleship and was always admiring the box art of the ship. My interest would grow even more in the ship when I first saw Space Battleship Yamato back in the late 1970's. She was truly an awesome and impressive battleship.
