I never saw Stringer as not being smart enough for the business world. He was smart enough, he just put business up on a pedestal. It never occurred to him to think Clay Davis or any other "legitimate" business people would cheat him. Not because they feared him or anything, but because Stringer held up legitimate business as more pure than the drug trade. He was naive, but by the end the blinders were definitely off. Lesson learned. The game is the game, whether it's drugs or real estate.

He got into the Co-op just to destroy. He became a "businessman" by mimicking Prop Joe, copying him in a simple manner every time, but rather than using the Co-op to make more long term money etc., he simply wanted to destroy it and dominate everyone else. With Marlo I think destroying the Co-op was less about making more profit and more about him being able to do what he wants without having to listen to anyone. Marlo is nihilism and simplicity. Like a zombie king that keeps plodding forward.

marlo became a businessman in season 5 though. he got the co-op business with the greek then cut the middle man out, prop joe, to gain more profit.

Marlo was not a combination of Avon and Stringer. He wasn't much of a businessman either. His power was his simplicity, dominate the opposition with brute force. After Marlo gets out of jail, he leaves a fundraiser to go right back to the corner, because he's a simple man, that's all he knows.
