Jan van Vlijmen (Rotterdam, 11 October 1935 - Réveillon (France), 24 December 2004) was a Dutch composer. I studied with him (1978-1981)

Nabuko Imai, viola and the Schonberg Quartet

Van Vlijmen studied organ and piano at the Conservatory of Utrecht and composition with Kees van Baaren. After his Graduate Studies he was first teacher at the Utrecht Conservatory (1961) and later (1965) he became the director of the School of Music in Amersfoort. In 1968 he again became teacher at the Utrecht Conservatory, and after Kees van Baaren's death in 1970 he became the Director of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. From 1984 til 1987 he was direcor of the Nederlandse Opera and from 1990 til 1997 he was director of the Holland Festival.

In 1980 he won the Matthijs Vermeulen Award for his orchestral work "Quaterni". Already in 1965 he won the 'Staatsprijs" and in 1966 the 'Fontein-Turnhout award for his composition Gruppi per 20 strumenti e percussione. He passed away in Réveillon (France) in 2004.
