**Résumé of dances & scenes for this clip:
1. Scène dramatique du Grand Brahmane et Nikia
2. Scène
3. Nikia joue de la vînâ
4. Pas d'action
**Note -
Many will notice that the scene which spans from 5:05-6:36 is very different from the way it is performed today - today this passage is performed with Nikiya making her entrance from the temple & subsequently performing a little number with a water pitcher on her shoulder, all the while looking here and there for Solor. I'm not sure when this rather crucial change came about but it was likely made in the early Soviet-era.
As is shown here, the music originally accompanied a scene in which Solor watches his beloved Nikiya from afar while she plays her veena in the temple window (the harp that is heard in the music is meant to be a representation of Nikiya's veena). Unfortunately, my blurred film does not allow one to see this scene well, which is far more romantic when compared to what came about via later revivals.
Also, many may notice that the Pas d'action of Nikiya & Solor is a bit shorter - the pas de deux as it is danced today came about in 1914 when the danseur Nikolai Legat expanded the music so that he could add in more athletic partnering elements, etc.
--ENJOY!!
I've read that Pavlenko gave this performance the same day she came back from tour. From airport she went to home, got sleep for some hours and went to premiere, without any rehersals.
