This is my first student film, Hero For a Day.

I wrote the script in Feb. 2008 and we shot in March. Preproduction took about two weeks before shooting and we shot with a skeleton crew of four including myself which was fine with me because I preferred a small crew. I did my own DP work and editing as well as the "shaky" effects in the bathroom scene.

Everything was shot on location in Nashville, TN and all the lighting was natural except for a "baby" that we used in the kitchen. Shooting took place on March 21st and 22nd and was completed in a total of nine hours. This was good because I like to shoot very quickly and efficiently, and being my own DP and editor allows me to make that happen as a director because I know exactly what footage I need.

All the glowing eye effects were handled by Andrew Wade and the mask was made by the very talented folks at Xtreme Design FX. We weren't given a budget for our projects so I had to use money out of my own pocket. Using methods I picked up from Lloyd Kaufman, I was able to put together all the costumes, props, locations, and craft services together and keep the whole film's budget under $100.

The story came along out of my own experiences moving to Nashville and feeling alone in a big city, getting stuck in a mind-numbing routine and just waiting and hoping for something special to arrive at my doorstep and change things. To date, I have never suited up and tried my hand at crimefighting. =)

  • as a fellow film student, gotta say its not half bad. i usually cringe at most student stuff, especially on Utube, but this had some elements that were really working well, especially for something shot in almost all natural light in 9 hours with a 4 person crew. you know, there were some spots that were rougher than others,as imagine you're somewhat aware, but i've seen thesis films from some of the best schools in the country that you have beat... shows promise and fairly strong craftsmanship.

  • Thanks so much!

  • never mind, i saw the ending. dude, that was a well made vid. but im sick of heros (not that that was one) bieng jokes.the used to be respected. don't go to my acount

  • I'm actually kind of tired of superhero movies playing up the protagonist to be a badass. You see the origin, the obligatory introduction of an arch-nemesis, and the hero's triumph over the villain (unless the villain survives...depends on the size of the hero's rogues gallery and how much more money the studio thinks it can make from a sequel).

  • I mean, we may have seen some great movies this summer that were about superheros, but they all had essentially the same story (Dark Knight not included) and that's a story I'm tired of paying to see over and over with different characters. Just wait until Watchmen comes out. Better yet, just go read the book.

  • Nice vid,, did you do the effects all yourself? I like the way the eyes light up the scene, its a really nice job with the roto work. and the attention to detail with the glows looking like they are affecting the scene and stuff.
