If they are within one square on the city, they give naval support (extra attack) to your army.

has any one noticed that when you play a game the ai or you dont go with the defense units. Because u have archers during ancient and medevil pikemen for industrial and modern and moder infantry in modern? Check it out nex time you play

you go to the boat, and select it, then aim it at the land, it will have a golden circle, you click it, and all the troops on it will come out. If the ship is out of moves, switch to a unit on the ship, then switch back to the ship and the golden ciricle will re appear. This also works with settlers who are out of moves and great people whom you need to activate.
