Did you burn out the inside, or do anything to the lid before using it to cook? Just bought a drum myself getting ready to make a smoker.

This drum was brand new and clean and shiny on the inside. Same for the lid. all I did on the first run was to wipe down all the interior with vegatable oil and burn some charcoal for a couple of hours in with a heavy smoke. I am about to add an IQ110 automatic temp controller, another side shelf, hooks to hang my utensils and a water pan to it.
