To do this yourself go to: http://www.tinyurl.com/crystalx2009

Preparation:
1) You will need two old wine glasses and an old decanter or clear glass bottle of about 0.5 litres (1 pint) capacity, and the Water-into-Wine kit.
2) Add about a third of the citric acid crystals (Item A) to the decanter.
3) Pour into the decanter 300ml (1¼ cups) of tap (home supply) water and ensure the crystals have dissolved.
4) Take the plastic bottle from the kit (containing the light pink liquid marked Item B). Carefully remove the screw cap and using the pipette, add 8ml of the liquid to the decanter. The pipette is 3ml so about three full charges will be enough. You will notice that the pink solution goes clear when it mixes in the decanter. Avoid getting the solution on your hands and make sure that you replace the screw cap tightly.
5) Take the plastic cup from the kit and using the wooden spatula, add to it a third of the sodium hydroxide crystals (Item C). Be careful with this chemical as it is caustic, and make sure that the bag is sealed when you are finished to stop it absorbing water from the atmosphere.
6) Half fill the cup with tap water and ensure the crystals dissolve. If you use the spatula to mix the cup content, rinse it well and leave it to dry if you intend to use it again.
7) Rinse the pipette in tap water to get rid of the pink solution, and then use it to add 1ml of the cup contents to one of the wine glasses. This is the one that will transform the water into wine. You are now ready to do the trick.

The Trick:
Present two wine glasses and a decanter, the wine glasses apparently empty and the decanter containing a clear liquid, which you can honestly say is water (you filled it yourself from the tap). Now you need your imagination to come up with a story to suggest why one of the wine glasses will turn water into wine and the other will not. Perhaps you can put a favoured persons picture, or religious symbol near the glass that will transform the water. First, pour the decanter into the untreated wine glass; no surprises, nothing happens. Next pour the decanter into the second glass (remember: showmanship is all). Watch with amazement as the water you pour turns instantly into a rich ruby coloured wine. Pause for audience gasp and rapturous applause.

  • Crystals are hydrochloric acids, do not eat lol

  • OK - I'm going to chuck a bunch of white powders in little plastic bags into the water. Right, now it doesn't LOOK much like wine... but trust me, if you drink it you WON"T be complaining and I guarantee the party will keep on going...
