On Wednesday, September 29, 2009, Susie Kay, founder and presidnet of Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund, appeared on News Channel 8 to talk about the closing of the organization.
After sending 1,000 high school students to college and nearly 14 years of forming thousands of relationships between students from Washington, D.C. public schools and members of the regional business and political communities, Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund will close its doors for good this fall.
Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting D.C. public high school students as they transition from high school to post-secondary education. We provide our students with life training skills by introducing them to a number of high-impact programs such as our mentoring, internship and college and standardized test preparatory programs. We also provide our students with academic scholarships to help them pursue their dreams of a post-secondary education.
Most of our students are the first in their immediate families to attend college and many come from challenging social and economic backgrounds. We strive to help our students find their best pathway to post-secondary education as well as build bridges of understanding between our local community and our students.
