A Norwegian crewed destroyer, the Svenner, formerly the HMS Shark, was also sunk by 3 S/E-Boats off Sword Beach on D-Day & broke in two. The S-Boats fired at the BB's HMS Warspite & Ramillies & the warspite blew one boat out of the water with her 15-inch etc. guns & the two remaining S-boats then quickly skedaddled.

I often wonder why they just didn't run aground one or two destroyers per beach to provide fire support. The Allies could afford to lose a few DD's but needed every bit of help for such an opposed landing.

@Corry463 Well that's too bad. My mom says he was on a Destroyer that sunk on D-Day, which is what led me here. Do you have any information on other ships? Or know how I could find that info? Any help would be appreciated.

@Corry463 Well that's to bad, I know he was on a Destroyer that he said sunk on D-Day which is what led me here. Would you have any info on what ship that might be/ how I could find out? I appreciate any help you could give me.
My uncle was on the Corry when it sunk, he was in the boiler room. I've been told that the boiler room took a direct hit & that he never had a chance to survive. My mother spoke of him often & I would love to have had a chance to know him. She always wondered what exactly happened to him. Someone told her that he had made it off the ship, but was severely burned & died within minutes after being in the water. Is there anyone out there that can add to this? His name was Bernard Wade.

USS Corry (DD-463) was the only US destroyer sunk on D-Day, and US Navy's only major loss that day. Other destroyers sunk in the invasion: USS Glennon (DD-620) - June 8, 1944; USS Meredith (DD-726); USS Rich (DE-695) (escort destroyer) - June 8, 1944.

@confirm514 From the USS Corry muster roll for June 1944, and the USS Corry survivors / Killed In Action listing that I have, there is no entry for any USS Corry crew member with the last name of Schwab. Possible he transferred off the ship before D-Day?
