On March 24, 2010, Wednesday, I hired a helicopter to fly me over the San Gabriel River. And going north and then going south I shot this video out the doorless bird. In this section, I am flying up to the San Gabriel Dam and Morris Dam.

I did this because of my concern for our community's water. We have been getting all sorts of written material from the Water Agencies about how we must conserve water. We are to not water our lawns at certain times. We are not to get a glass of water instantly at restaurants - all pretty petty and SILLY restrictions if you consider what I am about to show you...

I don't dispute the need for conservation, I believe, however, that there is more to this story then all the people in Valley 'using too much water' (we do actually).... I do believe that Climate Change WILL cause great destruction to our society, but, if we are to have a decent life into the future - if our children and their children are to have a decent life into the future and on and on - we will need to re-think how we do BUSINESS and how we use our land.

We need to no longer be the nice guy and roll over for what ever NEW idea comes marching. This is THE big one! THEN, we need to no longer just accept that our political leaders know what they are doing.... we have to demand that the businesses that exploit our resources (and people) do the right thing... We need to know as much to b e called experts. HOW DO WE DO THAT? Do as I do .... read read read, ask questions and look for answers.

So, I fly up to the Valley from El Monte Airport and look to at the Durban Pit, which Vulcan Materials (a mining company in the City of Industry in Southern California) largest pit for cement aggregate (sand and stones for cement and concrete), I look at ALL of their pits in the Valley - and most are filled with water.... WHY? Because, Vulcan dug down deep enough to get to the top of our aquifer - the water table. And they have exposed acres and acres and acres of our drinking water source to ------- EVAPORATION.

I have been wondering WHY haven't the Water Agencies been screaming about this?????
They tell US they are going to raise our rates and yet they SAY NOTHING to this GIANT pit maker which is wasting our water and tainting it with coal dust and silica.

First look at the video then look at the annotated Power Point ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ-vJ9Q2guE ) which will point our the various important features as I fly up to the mountains. See if you see what I see....

And by the way... the little community that was finished and the houses sold in 2005 (in the MOUTH of the River as it comes shooting out of the mountians....) was nearly destroyed by the 2005, '100 year storm' (a classification that describes an event that is 'rare') in the Mountains. Boulders the size of BUSSES pounded their two escape routes (the little bridges across the San Gabriel River which you can see if you scrub through that part -there are a few frames showing the one bridge). Look closely at the sides of the mountains - they will tell you how high the water has been in the past.... by the 'bathtub' rings of vegetation..... Poor little people. Snookered by their own City (Azusa acquired it from the Forest Service) so they could get more money.... but put these people in danger.

Don't believe everything is going to be OK.... or even accept that your city/ county/community/state/country has done its due diligence... 'cause most likely. they have only glanced at the issues... there is ALWAYS more then meets the eye...

Remember;

The solutions of yesterday BECOME the problems of today. (a dear friend told me that)

  • Yes, those holes in the San Gabriel Valley has water in them is from our aquifer and it's evaporating away what we have to drink. Now, I must go visit the dams in the mountains that are filed with sand and rocks instead of rain water/snow melt... the dams in the mountains are there to catch water that might flood the valley. If the Dams are filed with dirt, then much less water can be stored in then and rain water could flush down in a fast blast like in 1938.

  • Is this near the 605 and the 210 freeways? I've always wondered what those bodies of water were.
